Your questions about chiropractic, answered

For clarity, we use the words misalignment and subluxation interchangeably. Please contact our Maplewood Chiropractic Office if you have any questions or would like further explanation. We'd be happy to help!

Over time, injuries, stress, and trauma can cause misalignment, joint instability and inflamation in your body, interfering with the nerves that send vital messages through the spinal cord out to organs and tissues. Chiropractic is the process of adjusting your spine and improving your nervous system to promote healing and wellness, improve your body’s functioning, and help you heal yourself.

Basically, daily living takes a toll on our bodies. But, there are three major causes of a subluxation or misalignment

  1. Chemical: poor diet, pollution, drugs, and alcohol
  2. Physical: accidents, falls, improper lifting and repetitive motions.
  3. Emotional: anger, grief, fear, and stress

If you suspect you are subluxated, have a misalignment or are experiencing discomfort, please come in for a free consultation and learn how you can start feeling better.

Sometimes, subluxations are hard to notice. Many times, you won’t experience any symptoms for quite some time. When you start feeling the effects of a subluxation, you might (at first) not be able to figure out what you did that’s causing your pain or discomfort because it happened long ago or at the time seemed a minor incident.

If you have headaches, numbness or tingling in your extremities, or neck, back, and hip pain it’s a good idea to set up a complimentary consultation. Even if you don’t have any symptoms, you could possibly be subluxated. A thorough examination can show the location and severity of your misalignments.

Chiropractic can help you regain your health and life.

You could have a misalignment and not even know it. Just like tooth decay, plaque in the arteries, or cancer, a subluxation can be present before warning signs appear. A thorough complimentary chiropractic consultation can reveal the location and severity of these misalignments.

Sometimes. The thing is, the amount of pressure that can cause nerve interference is tiny: the weight of a dime resting on the back of your hand, for instance, is just enough to change the way your nervous system functions.

It’s better to care for a subluxation than hope it clears up on its own.

At any time, at any age. During pregnancy and childbirth, your child experiences trauma to the upper neck, back region, and nervous system. When they’re a toddler, your child takes tumbles when learning how to walk. As they grow, your child will play sports, rough house, and be exposed to environmental stressors that cause misalignments.
Chiropractic care helps your child be their very best.

For babies, there are six times during the first year recommended for check-ups:

  • After the birth process
  • When your baby holds his/her head up
  • When your baby sits up
  • When your baby starts to crawl
  • When your baby starts to stand
  • When your baby starts to walk

Then, as your child grows and develops, they should be checked regularly to ensure the spine is clear and functioning is optimal.
If you notice your child is experiencing any of the following, you should set up an appointment as soon as possible: ear infections, breathing problems, developmental delay, nursing difficulties, Colic, or sleep disturbances. While these are typically said to be “normal” parts of childhood, chiropractic has been shown to improve or resolve these health conditions.

Yes. Pediatric chiropractic adjustments are very, very gentle. Dr. Okins knows exactly where and how to adjust, and applies “no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato”.
